Smart Phone Want and Data Plan Don’t Need

by NancyJ on March 23, 2010

Smartphones are great, but even if you're in a wifi hotspot 90% of the time and don't intend on using 3G, they still force you to get a 3G data plan. Why? I think that's crazy. Watch my video to see my thoughts on this.

These cell companies are crooks!

for you, you dont’ really have to have it but im sure there are those who really need thoe type of phones and if they do they will put up with the extra costs. ask joe about the data plans there is a reason why they do them. it is 175 dolalrs btw to terminate early on verizon

I think the point of smart phones is to always be connected so data plans make sense for them IMO. WiFi does no good when you’re on the move. Also, you have to remember that these are cell companies after all. It does them very little good to sell you a phone to use with another company’s network. I do think you should be able to choose any hardware you want and the service provider shouldn’t treat any device differently in terms of requirements or pricing.

how much is the data plan for the droid????

rml695 December 20, 2009 at 9:05 pm

As I understand it, all smart phones have a single $30/month rate on top of your voice plan.

suxatguitar1 December 22, 2009 at 6:14 pm

The reason a data plan is forced is because it adds $30 a month to the plan. How else are you going to get these $600 phones and paying nearly nothing for them. I bought myself a used no contract iPhone for this reason. 3 year contracts are also ridiculous. Be happy that most US contracts are only 2 year. We aren’t as privileged in Canada.

Get an ipod touch! What is your take on this?

rml695 December 27, 2009 at 10:24 pm

Got a 1st generation iPod Touch & debating whether I want to upgrade.

If you purchase a phone smartphone elsewhere (ebay) AT&T still forces the data plan on you, even though I only use wifi. This should be illegal! Imagine if you buy a TV and the manufacturer forces you to buy cable from them! This is the USA isn’t it?

I have an iphone but have no data plan and actually blocked data from the 1st day. Theres very few times I dont have a wifi connection and want to do something that needs data.

rml695 January 6, 2010 at 6:53 am

HOw’d you manage to get by without a data plan?

orangeoreo7 January 8, 2010 at 10:12 pm

It may have been because I knew the person setting up my plan but I also called my provider (fido-canada) after and told them to block my data so I get no charges by accident. My friend also has his data blocked and everything because one time he went over his data plan by $3000 haha.

I spent half the night trying to figure out how to use a free wifi hotspot with my Treo 650 smartphone (verizon) or my T-Mobile To Go GSM prepaid Sim on a Motorola Razr V3. Still can’t.
We can go buy a mini Netbook and surf the web at Dunkin’ Donuts, but we can’t do the same with our phones?
The Treo does have the Blazer browser. I had their GPRS (?) service for a free intro month, but canceled the plan as it was so slooooow and not worth $50 a month. But there’s no easy Wifi solution.

woopswrongplanet January 22, 2010 at 6:27 am

(cont’d)
I thought there was something called WAP you could use for free at airports, etc., years ago. I had a bluetooth enabled phone then, but was unsuccessful at figuring it all out. Trying to learn from google searches isn’t helping any.

I need phone + free internet for dummies. Any ideas? :)

sourpatch1316 February 6, 2010 at 6:14 pm

Omg,
agreed.

I want the Samsung Rogue. But of course, my mom won’t pay for the plan.

Verizon needs to get their act together before they lose customers, I thought they were still better.

ARE THEY SERIOUSLY BEING INVESTIGATED?

rml695 February 6, 2010 at 6:18 pm

As I understand it, yes.

sourpatch1316 February 6, 2010 at 7:38 pm

@rml695

Do you have any updates? What are they investigating it for? Because of the plans?

rml695 February 6, 2010 at 7:39 pm

As I understand it, for the $350 ETF associated with smartphones.

sourpatch1316 February 6, 2010 at 7:43 pm

@rml695

Oh yes, I see now. Doubling the price of the phones, and they want us to pay an extra $100 a month to have a smart phone. Even if we don’t use internet or APPs.

Verizon is starting to P. me. O.

rml695 February 6, 2010 at 7:45 pm

In regards to the ETF, I believe Sprint Verizon and ATT& are all coming under fire for this. I haven’t heard anything about T-Mobile, though.

sourpatch1316 February 6, 2010 at 8:05 pm

@rml695

T-Mobile doesn’t really have that great of service though; I prefer Verizon… Unless it gets worse.
I bet you there is going to be a protest on this. People are going to start boy cotting.

DeftJ February 17, 2010 at 11:56 pm

like i want the motorola droid but i think they are bsing me making it manditory to get the data plan.

member07 March 7, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Fuck these carriers and fuck their prices.

More competition is needed, now!

JeremiahMarksMD March 14, 2010 at 2:59 pm
