Motorola’s Devour hit the market in February 2010 and the company’s third Android phone has met wide acclaim. The Devour is a less complicated alternative to the Droid, but mirrors it’s competitor in many ways. When purchased through Verizon, users may take advantage of several of the company’s own apps in addition to the Devour’s standard Google and other feature apps.
Weighing in at 5.89 ounces, this phone is a bit heavier than many smartphones on the market. However, the extruded aluminum casing provides a sturdy and solid feel. The 3.1-inch display is bright but is rather small compared to the phone’s size. More room on the surface could easily be devoted to the screen.
There is a lot of unused space within the control area as well, especially the gaping hole on the left side above the thumb pad navigation spot. The full keyboard on this slider phone is spacious and features raised keys. However, the addition of dedicated number keys forces the space bar to be squeezed in between letter keys in the bottom row.
This phone runs only Android 1.6, a far cry from Droid’s OS 2.0. The recommendations are already in to make the Android OS more uniform across smartphones or provide more clear notification when OS updates will be pushed out. As far as features go, the Devour is chock full of them, but one that is severely lacking is the camera. At only 3.0 megapixels, the user has the choice of only three resolutions and one editing option regarding color effects. The quality of the photos and camcorder recordings are adequate even with these shortfalls.
The Devour is a sturdy and well-performing phone that includes a nice sized keyboard and many great features including MotoBlur contact management. However, as with many smartphones, the display is small relative to the size of the phone. The camera does not offer the number of features that one would expect and the placement of some of the controls is awkward. Overall, the phone is a good buy for the $149.99 price tag and additional deals may be found on Verizon’s Web site.
