The MyTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition phone from T-Mobile is truly a music lover’s phone. It contains a Fender inspired design, 16GB media card, comes pre-loaded with music from artists like Eric Clapton, and includes a 3.5mm audio jack. It is easy to use and performs well, but lacks basic features like camera editing. In addition, the quality of downloaded video images is uneven and the browser and virtual keyboard have some glitches. Despite these drawbacks, this Google Android OS phone is a great improvement over its predecessor, the G1.
Many may be familiar with the T-Mobile commercial featuring Eric Clapton that highlights this phone. The MyTouch features a slim design inspired by the Fender Sunburst and a 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen with a virtual keyboard. Both portrait and landscape keyboard orientations are not offered when using all features, which is strange and can cause some difficulties. The HVGA display is bright and crisp and allows for screen customization. The MyTouch has a standard Android interface that makes good use of the touch technology.
Neat features include voice search, support for T-Mobile’s MyFaves service, Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, ability to sync with a PC, USB storage, and 3G support, as the phone’s name implies. GPS with Google Maps is another great feature and it works well when zooming in and getting turn by turn directions. The phone supports several POP3 email services but support of email attachments varies depending on the email client used. The Web browser requires the user to go through multiple steps to perform some basic functions.
Unlike the G1, the MyTouch has Microsoft Exchange server support, making it very work-friendly. The music player features are basic but easy to navigate. Music can be loaded directly onto the phone or users can buy tracks through the Amazon MP3 Store. Videos may be loaded using 3G bands, but doing so gives them a blurry quality. They have a much better appearance when loaded using Wi-Fi. The 3.2 megapixel camera has video recording but no editing features for either images or videos. Photos come out decent but with a yellow hue.
The cost of the MyTouch 3G is $179.99 with a two-year contract through T-Mobile and additional purchase of a data plan is required. This phone comes packed with features including touch screen, 3G support, Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, USB storage, GPS, and a 3.2 megapixel camera. The Web browser is adequate but requires extra steps to perform simple tasks. Downloaded videos appear blurry using 3G but much better using Wi-Fi. Overall, this phone packs a lot of well-performing features into a great design for the music lover.
