Nielsen Smartphone Owners Avidly Use the Internet

by Ava on July 1, 2010

A respected survey and market research institution has admitted that Smartphone users have used the internet longer and more often.  Nielsen’s reports negate the belief of many that Smartphone owners do not really use their gadgets’ internet capability much.  According to it, in the first quarter of 2010, Smartphone owners used and average of 298 megabytes per month.  This is a huge increase when compared to the same period a year ago.  In the first quarter of 2009, the average amount used by Smartphone owners is only 90 megabytes.

The report from the survey firm is based from its study of over 60,000 of the mobile internet devices’ users.  However, Nielsen’s senior vice president, Roger Entner, said that only to the top 6 percent of Smartphone owners are actually expending half of the data.  The majority still do not connect to the internet often using their phones.  Others do not surf the internet at all, a fact that puzzles Enter.  The number of those who do not use their gadgets for internet is significant, about a quarter of the Smartphone-owning population.

The Smartphone has been introduced to the market and was warmly accepted because of is computing power.  A virtual computer that serves as a phone at the same time, it has made the internet and other software available for people on the go.  However, despite these features, a huge majority of its owners and users utilize their gadgets merely for phone calls and texting only.  There are still no conclusive studies regarding the bases for this apparent lack of appreciation for the smart phones advanced features.  Nielsen, however, provides a hint that it may be caused by the fact that over a third of the Smartphone owners have not registered themselves under data plans.  Applying for data plans would have lessened the costs for internet connection using the mobile internet device.

In checking the current bandwidth usage, a Smartphone user can just log in to his mobile phone service provider’s website.  This may also be done by opening the Settings app, and selecting the General category.   By going to the Usage sub-category and reading the Cellular Network Data under it, one can see the bandwidth usage that has been consumed so far. This is the sum of the data that has been utilized ever since the mobile gadget’s owner began linking to the internet.  This reflects the length of time and the frequency of online use.
