How many times have you driven around and around and tried to find a parking spot when you are out in the town? That can be a real hassle, especially if you are in a big hurry. It is undeniable that finding a great parking spot is not as easy as it should be and if we have some sort of help, then that would certainly make things a whole lot easier. With the release of the Android app Open Spot, Google Labs have made it possible to locate a parking spot faster.
If you think at it must be hard to work out the Open Spot app, then you are mistaken. Basically, you have a Google map on your mobile device that will have your present location up to one and a half km or 0.9 mile radius of area surrounding you. The app goes on to show you the spots which parking is available in the area. These available parking spaces would be marked off in your map and if they have not been occupied will keep in being highlighted in your map for up to twenty minutes. After that, even if the spot is still free the mark will disappear from the map.
If you have used up the parking spot and are leaving, then it is your responsibility to go and mark off the parking spot as free so that other drivers who have Open Spot will be aware that there is one spot that is available for parking.
This system makes it possible for you and all the other users to get the real-time news on great parking and not have to worry too much in trying to find a good spot. However, like any other application this one has a few restrictions. For instance, there is no guarantee that the parking space marked as free will still be so by the time that you get there, or if someone else took the space before you did. The app has no way to unmark the highlighted spot if it has been occupied already either.
Another problem with this is that you will need a network of other users that can report the change in parking spot. If you do not have one then it might be a bit hard to utilize the application. The best thing in this scenario is to have a group so that you can help each other out.
On the whole, the application Open Spot is extremely useful albeit still lacking in some areas. Who knows, maybe the makers of the app will be able to resolve the network user issue and pretty much eliminate the need for it in the future.
