Go back a couple of years ago and the Blackberry Curve was one of the most popular phones on the market. It gave Blackberry loyalists an alternative to the larger Blackberry's and was also a marked improvement over the Blackberry Pearl that met with mixed reviews. While this phone is still a big seller, is it outdated?
A quick look on sites like Amazon and eBay will still show that the Curve sells for close to $150, more if the phone is unlocked for any carrier. This is a pretty impressive price when you take into account how old the phone is. Considering the fact that some services are doing a 2 for 1 deal on new service, it is amazing that it is still fetching these kinds of prices.
The reality of it is that for any carrier other than AT&T, this is still one of the best phones that a Blackberry user can have. While it will not compare to a Droid or iPhone, it will more than serve its purpose for the person that is looking for a smartphone that gets decent Internet and that can respond to emails. So why is it outdated for AT&T and nobody else?
We recently published a review of the Blackberry Bold and that is the reason to look elsewhere for AT&T customers. The Curve usually operates on the Edge network for AT&T customers, which is noticeably slower than their 3g network. While the phone does receive pictures, it does not play video, nor does it get running feeds off sites like Pandora (which has become extremely popular over the last year). Some of these features are not exactly important to all users, but they are nice perks to have.
Anyone paying for top notch service, in this case AT&T customers would have to pay about $120/month to use all services on the Curve, you might as well get everything that you are paying for. The Bold offers a significant upgrade in options for the same price, so it is crazy to use any other phone (other than the iPhone) on AT&T. For those that are with other carriers, if you are not a fan of the Droid, the Blackberry Curve should be your next option.
