Is Facebook Planning to Join the Smartphone Fray

by Ava on September 24, 2010

Here is one piece of information that would make everyone say that social networking has developed to a much higher notch.  Facebook, whose immense popularity can no longer be argued, has been rumored to be on the path of developing its own mobile internet device that will soon rival those that that have already established themselves in the market. Although confirmation from the networking site’s officials is still being awaited, sources of these persistent rumors have said that the actual development of the hardware is being worked on by a third-party.  However, Facebook is said to be creating customization of the Android OS, which will be powering the new phone.

Although it is still their Android that will be used to operate the Facebook phone that is still in the works, Google and other smartphone industry leaders have reasons to be worried.  Once it has its phone out in the market and once it has successfully customized the Android OS, it will be no longer impossible for the social networking giant to develop its own OS and apps. This will, of course, make the competition much fiercer among the mobile internet device companies.   For the consumers, however, this is much welcomed news.  Great competition, after all, is the precursor of price drops.

According to sources, what triggered Facebook’s current ambitious effort was the introduction of Google’s Nexus One.  Knowing it will achieve bigger advantage if it is able to apply its own service into the smartphone it is coming out with; Facebook has decided to overcome the limitations of app offerings.  Instead, it will base its service on the OS itself through customization.  This may allow the phonebook’s contact list to be integrated to the friends list in the Facebook page or account.  Such feature will certainly give its phone an edge over other, especially in the eyes of the millions of Facebook users.

What is even better news to mobile internet device users is that Facebook is planning to come with a cheap phone.  The sources have said that it may even be as low as $50, which is obviously enough to send many people to queue to the nearest phone shops and get their own respective units.  However, it is not just the price that will make people decide into buying it but the unique features that it may have.  Of course, for Facebook fans, they will surely expect this to be really equipped enough to make browsing the social network’s site a lot easier.
