With the aim making it to the top of the smartphone industry, Google is about to launch a new feature that can be used for its Android phones. The App Inventor is expected to empower the non-programming users to easily create comprehensive and functional applications that can be used on Google’s Android phone. Creating the app is said to be simple as all that the user have to do is to connect a succession of blocks that compose a program. According to a report in the New York Times, this software tool has been tested in some colleges and universities. The report said that the App Inventor has, so far, met expectations of Google executives and satisfied the possible demands of users.
Google’s top executives have stated that they have high expectations regarding the acceptance of the App Inventor in the smartphone market. The capability of developing new apps is about to be provided to ordinary users, making this no longer the exclusive domain of IT experts and the IT-skilled among the users. In this regard, the Android market virtually becomes an open arena for developers because no permission will be required. Some observers in the smartphone market, Google’s move can be considered as a ploy to lessen the market share of the App Store, which is owned by Apple. On the other hand, the quantity of apps in the entire market for mobile internet devices can more than just double.
Experts in mobile internet hardware and software, however, have expressed some of their apprehensions over this development. The empowerment of non-programmers and non-coders to create their software applications using tools like the App Inventor may affect the over-all quality of the software industry. Others among them are also skeptical over the real use value of the app. They said that the app may just be a tool to create programs that do not really have special uses or capabilities. Google, for its part, is still optimistic about their latest move. They said that, by providing more people, including those that do not have any sound and advanced software background, the capability to create apps exclusively for the Android format, the company benefits even further.
Currently, Google is facing Apple in a tough competition for getting the best software developers in the field. In fact, their recruitment has gone beyond the confines of their corporate headquarters and branches. It has reached the colleges and universities with excellent computer science programs. Google is trying to edge Apple by not limiting its supply of developers only to individuals with good computer and IT background. Its tactic is to reach out to the non-developers too. So far, Apple has not yet responded to this, method planned out by Google.
