Android 2.2, also known as Froyo, is the latest version of the Google mobile device operating system. Android updates are rolled out in a staggered manner, so not many android phones possess Froyo. The benefits of this new operating system include improved speeds when Web browsing, Bluetooth voice dialing, in-browser Adobe Flash 10.1, and the ability to use the phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot.
There are several smartphones that currently run Froyo, so consumers who want the best smartphone in the Android world should get one of these. They include the Google Nexus One, HTC Droid Incredible, HTC EVO 4G, Motorola Droid, and Motorola Droid 2. They are offered by various wireless carriers and range in price from approximately $200 to $560.
T-Mobile and AT&T Wireless sell the Google Nexus One, but only to registered Android developers, so if you are not one of them, you are out of luck. The HTC Droid Incredible is sold by Verizon Wireless and it is comparable to the Motorola Droid X. The Droid Incredible is an excellent phone with a beautiful screen and a lot of power.
The HTC EVO 4G is the first 4G phone sold by Sprint and it is both powerful and speedy. Verizon Wireless is the retailer for both the Motorola Droid and the Droid 2. The Droid is no longer actively being sold but current users can get the Froyo upgrade. The Droid 2 is perfect for consumers who want both a large display and a physical keyboard.
Smartphone ratings give each of these Froyo-compatible devices, aside from the Nexus One, four out of five stars.
