Adobe has joined the fray in making the smartphone technology even more attractive to users. It recently introduced an AIR demo that displays Android phones being used for video calls between two users. Adobe’s Mark Doherty, who has gained the title of Flash Platform Evangelist in the mobile market, has said that the demo alone has gained wide acceptance. This led into speculations of Adobe’s impending partnership with Android manufacturers. However, the company has also been known to have entered talks with Apple as well. This new application for the Android phone was initially called Flash Time by Adobe. However, changes have to be made with its name in order not to confuse it with another product.
Doherty admitted that the app introduced is not yet for release officially. According to him, it was just a product of a testing procedure made on the AIR 2.5 to be used for Android. There are still no plans for releasing the app officially as an Adobe product though. Doherty said that he will instead present it as open-source. Further development work is still being done on the code. However, according to Doherty, the final and more stable product will be done by the following week. This is not the first time that information on Adobe’s efforts to produce apps for Android has been gathered though. As early as February of this year, Adobe already announced that it would be creating apps for Android, particularly the AIR and Flash.
Observers and analysts in the mobile internet device and smartphone market noticed that Adobe and Android has further strengthened their business ties in the recent months. Adobe is creating apps for Android while the latter is open to making the former as its exclusive source of apps. Some analysts said that this strengthened relationship is the result of Apple’s declaration of war against Flash. With the stinging criticisms that the iPhone 4 makers hurled against Flash, Adobe was prompted to forge a closer relationship with Android, which happens to be one of Apple’s top competitor. This series of events, however, is said to have benefitted the Android device users the most. With Adobe’s new product, they can now have the same video call feature that iPhone 4 users once exclusively enjoy.
Adobe said that the new app is actually an open platform. It expects Android users to enjoy its even more as this will allow them to create their own apps using the platform. The users will not only be limited to the existing features of the app; they can also develop their own. For Adobe and Android, this is another characteristic of the app that can give them an advantage over those of their competitors.
