In a recent conference on mobile internet technology and telecommunications, Samsung’s chief strategy officer and senior vice president of products and services, Omar Khan, said that 2010 will be the year of the superphone. This immediately raised speculations whether this means that the iPhone will face a serious challenge for a new type of mobile phones with advanced internet capabilities. Khan was quick to explain his point and proved the speculations as correct. He said that Samsung is introducing into the telecom market the Galaxy S., a new Android device. With a higher technology applied, Khan said that this may have to be labeled as a superphone in order to distinguish it from the smartphone.
A smartphone can be identified by its hardware features which include innovations in the touchscreen technology and a keyboard with a QWERTY format. Except for its own software applications for internet access, the rest of its features are not much different from those of ordinary mobile phones with cameras and audio-visual capabilities. Many of the top mobile phone manufacturers have developed their own smartphones. In most cases, these are equipped with native applications for internet access and other uses. A number have also made these phones supportive of other software developed for mobile internet devices.
The superphone was first used by Google when it introduced its Nexus One. Khan explained that the main difference between a smartphone and a superphone lie in the latter’s vast improvements from the chips utilized, to the hardware and software developed for it. Superphones are said to be more powerful in terms of hardware, which is why it is superior to the smartphone. A superphone’s outstanding features include larger screens, with some bigger than four inches. The camera is also quite powerful, with the capacity of five to eight megapixels. With such kind of camera, the superphone is expected to overtake its predecessors as the preference of those who use their camera to take pictures or capture videos. The superphone also has many microphones which can be used for cancelling noise in order to have clearer calls and recording. In order for all these features to function well, the superphone is powered by a 1 GHz processor.
Khan admitted that it is not only in hardware that superphones have an advantage. He said that these also have an edge in terms of software. These phones are equipped with operating systems such as the Android Froyo is being innovated with more features that allow multitasking. This makes the superphone virtually no longer comparable to smartphones or to any mobile phones but to laptops and PCs. The combination of superior hardware and software is expected to beat the smartphone in the market.
