When hitting the open road in a travel trailer, fifth wheel, or motor home, the goal is usually to see lands unknown. Getting lost is never part of the plan, but it can happen and when it does it can put quite a crimp in the travel itinerary. Having Wi-Fi Internet access while traveling and at the campsite enables RVers to get back on the (right) road to their destination.
Since Internet access is not always available at all campgrounds, or may cost a hefty amount, RVers should consider getting wireless Internet access themselves. One option is Wi-Fi and it requires only a laptop and possibly a PC card, depending on the age of the computer. Newer laptops have Wi-Fi cards built in and even older laptops can get wireless access through a PC card inserted into the PCMCIA slot of the laptop. This card costs between $50 and $100 and can be found online and in most electronics stores.
Wi-Fi mobile Internet access is available in areas called hotspots. These hotspots are located in public places such as hotels, airports, coffee shops, restaurants, schools, libraries, and truck stops. Areas that frequently have large public congregations usually have, or will soon have, hotspots. RV parks are starting to provide Wi-Fi hotspot service to RVers staying with them and this service may even be free.
The mobile broadband access provided by these hotspots will either be free or cost a small amount per hour. Some hotspot providers offer pay as you go or subscription plans for users, allowing them to access all of the provider’s hotspots throughout the country. RVers can go online to search for free public hotspots and learn more about the access plans offered by hotspot providers. Some providers require the use of proprietary software, which is usually available for download from the provider Web site.
Having Wi-Fi access from the RV is a modern convenience that provides individuals with broadband connection speeds to the Internet. In order to use this service, RVers will need their laptops and possibly a PC card designed for wireless access. Wi-Fi hotspots may be free or there may be a small charge for their use. RVers should research the various Wi-Fi options prior to embarking on a road trip so they will not be without wireless Internet access while on the road.
