RVers like to stay in touch with the world while traveling the highways and byways and one way to do this is to get wireless Internet service. There are several different ways to approach this situation and the decision between tethered or satellite service is just one. If these are the two options an RVer is considering, there are some things to know.
Tethering involves using the cell phone as a modem connected to a laptop computer via a USB cable or Bluetooth device. The RVer will need a Web-capable cell phone, a cell phone data plan, and a tethering plan. Each of these can be obtained through wireless providers like Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The two service plans will cost a total of approximately $70 per month for the lowest amount of data available.
Where the RV will be traveling is one determining factor in this decision. If it will be parked hundreds of miles from civilization, a satellite system is recommended. This is because the satellite is able to pick up a signal from further away than a cell phone can. A satellite system costs anywhere from $1,500 to $5,000 and the Internet service plan will run about $60 per month. Higher priced satellite systems provide mobile Internet capabilities while the vehicle is in motion, while the cheaper ones provide access only when stationary.
Connection speeds are another factor to consider because speeds may vary between satellite and tethered service. RVers should be aware that the connection speeds available via tethering are dependent upon factors like service provider and location. The speeds offered by a satellite system are much more consistent.
The decision of tethering versus satellite for mobile Internet in the RV will likely boil down to price, speed, and coverage area. Though coverage is spottier when using tethering, an antenna can be mounted to the roof of the RV to increase the range. A satellite will have a greater likelihood of connecting in areas far from civilization.
