AT&T has been providing iPhone users with options on insurance for their units. The move began last June 6, 2010 and, according to AT&T executives has been well accepted by its subscribers who are using iPhones. For subscribers who bought their Apple smartphones in June 6 and after, they may opt to pay an additional $13.99 a month to be included in their AT&T bill. This amount will serve as the premium for the recently introduced insurance plan. If the subscriber wishes to pay the premium on an annual basis, the amount to be collected will be $168.
The telecommunication giant has named the insurance plan as MobileProtect. The plan can be availed by subscribers by browsing the App Store. Although it is AT&T that offers this to its subscribers, the plan is actually managed by Asurion, an insurance company. According to AT&T executives, the insurance plan benefits all the stakeholders involved, although it is the subscribers that have the biggest advantages. They and Apple, the iPhone’s manufacturer, believe that this new offering can further increase the number of individuals who will subscribe to AT&T and avail of its smartphones. Apple particularly has expressed interest in this feature as it continues to encounter stiff competition from other smartphone brands.
A number of iPhone users, who are also AT&T subscribers, have shown their appreciation to this new feature. They said that they have always been afraid of having their smartphone units damaged because they spent a big amount of money for these. However, accidents can still happen and their units can still be damaged mechanically or electrically. With an insurance coverage, they feel assured that they can immediately have their units repaired or even replaced without much trouble. They can immediately process their claims and due attention will be promptly given to their units’ conditions. To qualify for this service, the users must sign up for it within 30 days after their smartphone units’ dates of purchase.
Some iPhone users, however, have expressed apprehensions over paying for the deductibles which, according to them, are quite expensive. The deductibles depend on the model and the memory capacity of the iPhones they own. For those who own units that have 8GB 3GS capabilities, the deductible is $99. For those who possess 16GB 3GS and 32GB 3GS, the rates are $149 and $199 respectively. The rates can even much higher for those who are not subscribed to AT&T. A 32GB 3GS iPhone may be imposed with a $699 deductible. However, most AT&T subscribers consider the insurance plan as a fair deal because of the guarantees it provides. Without insurance, repairs and parts replacements can cost more for damaged smartphones. Both AT&T and Apple confirmed that many users have applied for insurance coverage.
