Virgin Mobile To Release Unlimited Prepaid Mobile Broadband

by Jerry1973 on August 25, 2010

Virgin Mobile USA, owned by Sprint Nextel Corp. is moving into the unlimited prepaid mobile broadband arena. The company will soon offer unlimited prepaid wireless internet packages at the cost of $40 per month. This will replace most of the existing mobile Internet offerings the company currently provides to consumers.

The wireless industry has seen increased competition as of late. Budget-minded customers want to lower their spending on cellular service. They are also shying away from the long-term contracts that most major wireless carriers require. This opens up room for Virgin Mobile to jump in and gobble up some market share in the wireless internet sector.

The company will begin offering the $40 unlimited nationwide mobile broadband plan online on Wednesday. This new plan replaces the current Virgin Mobile $20, $40, and $60 measured-used mobile plans. The company will continue to offer a plan that provides ten days of measured use at a cost of $10. This plan is ideal for people who rarely use the Internet.

While Virgin Mobile moves in this direction, AT&T recently moved in the other. It eliminated its unlimited data plans for the Apple iPhone and began offering metered plans for the device. This left many who had not yet purchased their iPhones rather annoyed.

Virgin Mobile plans to roll out its new $40 unlimited wireless Internet plan to its retail stores in the next several weeks. Customers who are currently enrolled in the mobile plans being eliminated will be permitted to use up their current time or data balances. They will then need to select from either the $10 ten-day plan or the new $40 unlimited plan. The prepaid providers Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile have seen an increase in their customer bases while parent Sprint continues to watch its number of contracted clients decrease.
