Virgin Mobile has launched the MiFi 2200 mobile hotspot device for pre-paid subscribers. This is in response to the growing clamor by mobile internet gadget users for instant web access without having to submit themselves to post-paid plans and contracts. Costing only $150 with data plans as low as $ 10, Virgin Mobile is optimistic that their new device will attract more subscribers to their business and acquire a bigger chunk of the very competitive internet service market.
The mobile internet service provider is confident of the Novatel MiFi 2200 effectiveness in serving the internet connection needs of its subscribers. According to the company, this device has the capability to collect 3G signals coming from any of its networks. It is also able to establish a Wi-Fi hotspot, which can serve a maximum of five devices, from computers to smartphones, with internet connectivity. Unlike the WiMax capability that Sprint Overdrive provides its subscribers though, it may not be very fast. However, Virgin Mobile says that for those users who are running on a tight budget, the Novatel MiFi 2200 is the choice.
Mobile internet users can buy the Novatel MiFi 2200 for $150 and have it connected to the Broadband2Go, Virgin Mobile’s pre-paid web service. Users can take advantage of the free activation offered. The data plans are similar to the mobile communication provider’s pre-paid plans. With a minimum of $10, a user may be able to add data with the use of the Broadband2Go Top-Up cards. With $10 minimum plan, a user can already have access to 100MB. This has to be consumed within 10 days. According to Virgin Mobile, this amount of data can already serve the user for about five hours of internet surfing.
There are advantages to buying data plans more than the minimum. If a user gets a $20 plan, he can avail of 300MB of data, which can last to 15 hours of internet use. This will expire in 30 days, allowing the user much longer time for internet availability. Other plans are $40 for 1GB and $60 for 5GB. Both of these will expire after 30 days. Virgin Mobile suggests that subscribers determine the amount of data they will use in order not waste unused data and money as well. The company boasts that unlike their competitors, they provide a $60 per 5GB of data without requiring users a contract. They also say claim that the MiFi 2200 has batteries powerful enough to provide Wi-Fi service for four hours at the maximum.
