The Other Functions of the Mobile Phone

by Ava on June 26, 2010

First it started out with the regular conversations – parents to their kids and vice versa, friends to one another, boss to employees, and any other verbal interaction possible with the mobile phone. With the advent of wireless technology, most especially in the communication world, interaction with the rest of the world has never been the same.

Now that the internet technology has reached the wireless zone, too, Americans want this technology present in their cellular phones as well. This want began before with the usual sending of pictures. Then the transfer of videos and other MPEG format files, and then came story-sharing and telling experiences using social networking websites the most popular of which are Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. It is obvious that the consumers fancy more out of their mobile internet devices. Some of the most used features nowadays on mobile wireless internet-capable cellular phones are e-mail access, internet surfing, and calendars. Consider these trend-setting statistics:

• Almost all Americans over the age of twenty have working cellular phones which means they are using it, compared to only three fourths of the whole adult American populace in 2006 owning a cellular phone.

• Almost half of those who own cellular phones would want that can allow them mobile internet access, and this number has increased by ten percent two years ago.

• Because of these new developments in the mobile internet technology, 2008 saw almost thirty five million U.S. mobile phone subscribers have browsed the internet at least once a month utilizing their mobile phones.

• The statistical prediction is that by 2014, thirty nine percent of all who have wireless internet access will be regular internet surfers.

And to top these, internet shopping is now becoming a trend even in the mobile internet world. And this new development in the online marketing world is redefining the regular cellular phone industry into an internet marketing sector. American consumers all of a sudden found a way to be able to communicate with their favorite stores and sellers real-time twenty four hours a day.

And because of this, countless online retailers have joined the mobile internet access advertising and selling bandwagon. As of this writing, there are almost one hundred fifty m-commerce sites. What is exciting to learn is that in 2009 alone, EBay was able to market over the mobile conduit alone six hundred million dollars worth of products. Amazingly, mobile phones are becoming the store of the future.
