The Dell Aero, released on Tuesday, is the first smartphone from the computer manufacturer. The looks of it make one think of the Palm Pre but that is where the similarities end. This so-called smartphone is actually rather disappointing, especially considering the $99.99 price tag with an ATT Wireless two-year contract. Here are several reasons to pass by the Aero and pick another smartphone.
In the hardware category, this phone comes up short. High-end Android phones include 1 GHz processors, while the Aero’s is a measly 624 MHz. The Aero has a relatively small 3.5-inch display with a 360x640 pixel resolution. Compare these specs to the Motorola Droid X, which has a 4.3-inch screen featuring a 480x854 resolution. Though the Aero features a camera that is 5-megapixels and includes an LED flash, it does not have HD video recording capability like the iPhone 4 or Droid X. There is also no secondary camera feature for video calls.
Moving on to something that is even worse, the version of Android running on the Aero is 1.5. Yes, you read that correctly, this brand new phone runs a 16-month old version of the Android operating system. We are currently up to Android 2.2 and many improvements have occurred in the interim.
These Android enhancements relate to Google Maps, voice commands, the software keyboard, live wallpapers, and the all-important user interface. Running Android 1.5 means users will not be able to use many applications offered in the Android Market. Since the Android user interface was heavily customized by Dell, it also means that an Android upgrade will require a lot of reprogramming.
The ATT network is already strained by millions of happy iPhone users. In addition, the company no longer offers unlimited wireless internet plans for many of its devices, so ATT may not be the best carrier. There are better smartphones out there, like the Motorola Droid X or Droid 2 and the iPhone. The phones are more costly, but they are also more powerful.
