The T-Mobile G2 received smartphone rates 4 out of 5 stars from experts and 4 ½ out of 5 stars from users. This phone has a high-quality design, QWERTY keyboard, android 2.2, and is the first smartphone that supports the HSPA+ T-Mobile network. Despite small issues like the lack of tethering and mobile hotspot capabilities, this is perhaps the best android platform smartphone offered by T-Mobile.
The G2 is a successor to the G1 and though it came two years later, it was worth the wait. This high-end device is sold by T-Mobile for $199.99 with a two-year contract. The design is much improved over the G1, with a clean, professional look, stainless steel components, and a soft finish. The capacitive touch screen measures 3.7 inches and the display is bright and features great colors.
Typing options abound with an android keyboard, Swype, and a four-row physical QWERTY keyboard that is very easy to use. The keyboard slides out and though the sliding mechanism is smooth, the screen does not always stay in place. The phone includes an optical track pad, 3.5mm headphone jack, and microUSB port. A wired stereo headset and 8GB microSD card are provided.
HSPA+ is a T-Mobile 3G network evolution and the carrier promises speeds akin to 4G. This network is not widely available but smartphone reviews confirm the impressive speeds. It is unfortunate that though android 2.2 includes Wi-Fi hot spot functionality, the G2 has this feature disabled. Goodies that are included are Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and 3G support. A media player and 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and HD video capture are also onboard.
The G2 has excellent call quality from both caller and listener perspectives. Speakerphone quality was good and Bluetooth works fine. Though it only has an 800MHz processor, this phone experiences little to no delays, no matter the task.
