Communication has gone a long way over the years. These days, it is fairly commonplace to use computers and the internet as their primary means of communication. Internet chatting has progressed to the next level with the development of online video calls.
VoIP, or voice over internet protocol, is the communication service that uses the World Wide Web. It is what the internet phone service that makes video calls possible is called. How this works is the same way it does with the telephone, except that the person who is making the call makes use of a modem or internet router instead of a phone jack. For the most part, VoIP or voice calls have infinitely cheaper call rates than calling making use of a phone.
Skype and Fring are currently at the top of the market for internet video calls. And the unfortunate thing is that these two are currently in a war of words when it comes to video calling applications and allegations about service blocks between the two. Among the two, however, it is apparent that Skype is the bigger player in the game.
Skype, which has become a cyber world phenomenon, enables its users to talk to each other just like the traditional telephone dialling service. Using it is as simple as signing up to be a member. Members get to call other members for free. The catch is that if calls are made to non-members then a fee needs to be paid.
Fring on the other hand, although a smaller player, has been successful since it provides service that is virtually interchangeable with most of the other VoIP services out in the market, even Skype. Because it is possible to call a Skype user using a Fring account and not the other way around, Fring has made it to the top of the list of best VoIP applications.
Another cause of tension is the introduction of Fring’s two way video calling support application for the iPhone 4 with the use of 3G or Wi-Fi. This new development in the Fring application was such an enormous hit. In fact, the enormity of the Fring phenomenon at that time called for Fring needing to turn off support from Skype because the number of people wanting to make video-to-video calls had been too overwhelming for it to handle. This became a sore subject because up until now the Skype support has not been turned back on, with Skype apparently not letting them do this.
Whatever the case, it is unfortunate that this has happened. In reality it is not the two that are at the losing end of this war, it is the people who are using them.
