The Sanyo Zio SCP-8600 is an android smartphone sold by Sprint for $99.99 with a two-year contract and after $100 mail-in rebate. Sprint released this phone as a rival to the Zio sold by Cricket Wireless, which costs $229 online. Though the two phones have many similarities, there are also some differences revealed through smart phone comparisons.
The Sprint Zio includes some unique aspects like the new Sprint ID feature and some extra chrome around the edges of the phone, in contrast to the all-black Cricket version. These in and of itself do not make much of a difference for most users. The major difference between these two phones is the version of android running on each. The Sprint Zio features android 2.1 while the Cricket phone has the more outdated 1.6 version. Android 2.1 includes improvements to the interface as well as five home screens.
The handsets on both smartphones have identical measurements and the screen resolutions are the same. Both phones include a MicroSD card slot, 2 GB MicroSD card, and 3.5mm headset jack. The Sprint ID feature differentiates the home screen of the Sprint Zio. It allows users to further customize their usual Android experience.
Additional identical features include a virtual keyboard, 3.2 megapixel camera, video recorder, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, PC syncing, speakerphone, USB mass storage, voice commands, and a music player. The Cricket Zio features a File Browser app not included on the Sprint phone. The camera lens on both phones is on the rear of the phone next to the speaker.
The Sprint Zio has a volume that is just a bit louder than the Cricket phone. Call quality on both phones is decent and with both devices, users must speak louder if there is great deal of background noise. The data speeds on the Sprint phone are 3G, not WiMax. The Cricket version has a 6.9 hour talk time, whereas the Sprint phone’s battery provides only 4.6 hours of talk time.
