The green movement has reached the cell phone world and the Samsung Blue Earth is proof. The phone has solar panels that can be used for charging purposes. The amount of features and an eco-friendly design are the positive aspects of the Blue Earth, while the small display, lack of full keyboard, and sometimes poor call quality are negative points. However, doing one’s part to preserve resources goes a long way, so seriously consider purchasing this phone.
The royal blue casing of the phone is made of recycled plastic water bottles and other non-harmful materials. The solar panels are housed on the rear face and can be used to charge the phone, but charging will take a long time if the phone is completely dead. The phone is small and has a sharp, bright display. The TouchWiz interface creates three panels on the touch screen within which to customize widgets. The issue with the display is that it is quite small, making everything feel crowded. This phone does not have a full keyboard, so messages must be composed using an alphanumeric keypad.
In addition to the basic features of the Blue Earth, the phone features Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth, and even a pedometer. The Samsung music player is adequate and allows users to listen their downloaded music while flying. The phone also has an FM radio and allows users to play music in the background while performing other functions. A 3.2 megapixel camera and camcorder offer different resolutions, shooting modes, and editing options. The quality of photos and videos is decent but slightly washed out.
The phone is offered unlocked but does not feature support for 3G networks in North America. The phone will revert to EDGE service in these areas, making speed adequate. Call quality is good overall, but is often characterized by static or crackling sounds.
The Samsung Blue Earth is sold unlocked for the whopping price of $447. However, it cannot be stated enough how much we appreciate the conservation methods employed in the manufacture of this phone. The phone is made from recycled materials, packaged in a reusable recycled cardboard box, and includes solar panels for charging. The phone includes a wide array of features and though it does not have a full keyboard, the display is small, and call quality sometimes suffers, it is a great choice for those who are willing to spend the extra money. Going green sometimes comes at a cost, but it is worth it in the end.
