Review Of the Origin EON18

by Jerry1973 on June 29, 2010

The fact that it includes an Intel Core i7 processor, 500 GB 7,200 rpm and 80 GB SSD drives, and 8 GB RAM make the $4,499 price tag of the Origin EON18 gaming laptop a bit easier to swallow. This mobile Internet laptop is customizable, including the ability to add dual graphics cards. However, it is not the most comfortable device and it is very large and cumbersome.

Origin offers a boutique experience for gamers when it comes to its devices and customer service. The upper level of customization for the EON18 results in one of the best gaming laptops on the market. However, the design of the device is not unique and the size of the unit can only be described as very large. It features an 18.4-inch screen and, together with its adaptor plug, this laptop weighs 15.3 pounds.

There is a lot of flat resting space for the palms below the keyboard, which makes this device rather uncomfortable. The raised keyboard has small keys compared to the huge size of the laptop. The touch pad is not distinguishable in the physical or textured sense, requiring users to glance down to get their bearings. The multi-speaker audio comes with Dolby Home Theater optimization, but is neither loud nor clear. On the positive side, the display is large, colorful, and bright, making the viewing experience a pleasure.

The EON18 includes HDMI-out and in, TV tuner, Blu-ray drive, three USB ports, 1 USB/eSATA port, an Express card reader, Bluetooth, and 802.11 b/g/n mobile broadband. The 2.0 GHz Intel i7 quad-core processor is the high-end processing option for this device and makes this laptop one of the fastest devices on the market. Top-of-the-line Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics are available in several configurations and the EON18 contains three hard drive bays. The 12-cell battery lasted for one hour and six minutes during video playback testing. This is expected for what is basically a desktop PC packaged in a laptop design.

The Origin EON18 provides many features including a beautiful 18-inch display, Bluetooth, Blu-ray drive, Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics, Intel i7 processor, 500 GB plus 80 GB SSD drive, 8 GB RAM, and 802.11 b/g/n wireless Internet. All of that comes in the form of a bulky device with a high price tag and some less than stellar features including a small keyboard and average sounding speakers. However, as mobile Internet laptops go, this device can be customized with almost any features of a gamer’s dreams.
