The Nokia N97 Mini contains many improvements over its predecessor, the disappointing N97. The Mini features a revamped design that houses all of the great features smartphone users have come to expect. The performance of the phone is much improved from the N97, but the user interface is just as confusing as that of its larger namesake.
The smaller size of the N97 Mini compared to the N97 is definitely noticeable when in hand. The solid little Mini fits easily in a pocket without fear of breaking. Since this phone is smaller than the regular N97, the screen size has been decreased to 3.2 inches. The resistive touch screen display is bright and vibrant and the accelerometer quickly changes the screen orientation as necessary.
The inconsistencies in the user interface are one of the main drawbacks of this phone. Some tasks require multiple steps to perform and several menu items require two taps to open while others require only one. However, the QWERTY keyboard is much less cramped on the Mini than on its predecessor, making it more comfortable and accurate.
Some notable features on this phone include free Ovi Maps navigation service and 5-megapixel camera. The Ovi Maps GPS functionality includes text-to-speech spoken directions. The camera includes auto focus, dual-LED flash, an impressive 14x digital zoom, video capturing, and several editing options. Features are nice, but what about performance? The call quality on this quad-band phone is good. The Mini supports AT&T 3G service and the phone’s browser does a nice job at page display. Then there is the issue of awkward navigation, which is definitely a turn off. Users cannot simply enter a new URL in order to go to a new Web site. They must first press an arrow button, then a globe icon, and then enter in the URL.
The Nokia N97 Mini is not just a smaller version of the Nokia N97. It features more solid construction, better performance, and GPS functionality. However, this phone’s inconsistent user interface makes it less than user-friendly and the Web browser is rather difficult to navigate. At a price tag of $479.00 unlocked, some serious comparison to leading smartphones will need to be done before a decision is made to purchase the N97 Mini.
