The display and keypad of this phone leave something to be desired, but the music player and feature functionality make up for that. For a phone that costs under $20, this is a great choice for those who cannot live without their tunes.
T-Mobile is the only carrier in the U.S. that offers the XpressMusic line of phones. The 5130 is at the low end when it comes to models, but it does not disappoint. It is not a smartphone by any means, but that is not its purpose. It is geared toward listening to music and in this regard, it delivers. The phone also has additional multimedia features including a decent 2-megapixel camera and camcorder, both featuring various resolutions and editing options.
This candy bar shaped phone sports a two-inch display that contains adequate resolution but is a bit fuzzy when it comes to the appearance of graphics. All menus are intuitive, making them very easy to navigate. The keypad buttons are backlit and nicely sized, but feel rather slippery and low quality. Heavy textures and dialers will face an adjustment period when using the 5130.
Where this phone shines is in terms of the Nokia XpressMusic player with its simple and intuitive controls. Playlists, shuffle and repeat modes, an equalizer, a FM tuner, and stereo widening are standard features. The 5130 supports multiple file types, has an airplane mode for listening to music while in flight, and allows tracks to be used as ringtones. Transferring music to the phone is easily done using either a microSD card or USB cable. The sound quality is as can be expected from a lower-level phone. The external speaker yields the best results when music is played at low volumes, otherwise the sound is rather bass-heavy.
The Nokia 5130 XpressMusic phone is the ideal music phone for those who are budget-minded. The XpressMusic player has some great features, including an equalizer and FM tuner, and makes it easy to upload tracks to the phone. The sound quality is decent for a low-level phone and provides the best results using headphones. Though the display and keypad are not of the highest quality, they can be sacrificed for the music and additional multimedia experience offered by the included camera and camcorder.
