The HTC Tattoo smartphone was launched in the Asian and European cell phone market, but is now available for purchase in the United States. The Tattoo runs HTC Sense and Android 1.6 and has some cool features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and GPS, but it is an entry-level smartphone at heart. However, it is offered at a low price online and unlocked, so it may attract many who are looking to become smartphone users and do not require 3G service.
The Tattoo is compact and offers a neat customization feature. Users may customize the cover of the phone by selecting from pre-designed options or creating their own. This freedom comes at a price of about $16, but it is a nice option nonetheless.
The most undesirable aspect of the Tattoo is the poor quality of its small screen. Everything appears very tiny and characterized by dull colors. Since the phone is small overall, the onscreen keyboard is also small and rather difficult to use. The 3.2-megapixel camera yields pretty clear images but lends an amber coloring to photos. The video recording feature is nice to have, but the video quality is rather poor.
HTC Sense replaces the standard Android interface and provides customization capabilities. HTC Sense can be a bit overwhelming for those unfamiliar, but it is definitely a handy tool once it has been customized. The Android 1.6 operating system works well, although it experiences brief periods of sluggishness. GPS and Bluetooth are nice added features to this entry-level phone. A serious shortcoming is the lack of support for North American 3G bands, so users must resort to EDGE speeds. However, the Wi-Fi serves to help in this area.
The HTC Tattoo is a decent choice for those purchasing their first smartphone, but it really is more of a lower level version. The cover customization feature, HTC Sense, Android 1.6 operating system, and inclusion of GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth are its highlights. Poor screen and camera quality and a tiny keyboard are the drawbacks.
