In the world of mobile Internet laptops, the Asus Eee PC 1201PN does not shine, even though it is the first next-generation Nvidia Ion Netbook. The price of this Netbook is just under $500, making it on par with that of a full-fledged laptop. The processor is of the single-core variety and there is no automatic graphics switching, though it does have some performance and graphics advantages over its competition. The 0.3 megapixel Webcam, Bluetooth, 802.11n Wi-Fi, nice keyboard, speakers, and screen are not enough to make this Netbook a worthwhile purchase.

Though it has an 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N450 processor that features some improved performance and graphics capabilities in relation to its competitors, it is single-core, providing slow performance and a less than consistent gaming and video streaming experience. The 1201N, its predecessor, features a dual-core processor, and if it can be found on sale, will be a better deal because it is faster. The Nvidia Ion graphics do not provide many added features over the previous versions of the GPU. The Eee PC 1201PN configuration also includes 2 GB RAM and a 250 GB hard drive, neither of which knock your socks off at a price just shy of $500.
The raised keyboard is comfortable and easy to use, with a responsive multitouch pad beneath it. The glossy LED-backlit screen measures 12.1 inches and has a resolution similar to those found on 13 and 14 inch laptops. This makes for a nice viewing experience, and the loud stereo speakers make the listening experience just as nice. Atop the screen, there is a 0.3 megapixel Webcam that performs adequately.
HDMI out video is offered, and users may want to take advantage of this for playing back video files on a HDTVs. The video streaming experience on this Netbook is very unreliable. In addition, the combination of Atom processor and Ion graphics are not compatible with many mainstream PC games. However, all is not bad because the Eee PC 1201PN does include Bluetooth and 802.11n mobile broadband.
The Asus Eee PC 1201PN is really not a bargain for the money, even though it has an Intel Atom processor and Nvidia Ion graphics. The single-core processor is a step down from its predecessor 1201N and the 250 GB hard drive and 2 GB RAM are standard for high-end Netbooks such as this. Features include Bluetooth, a Webcam, 802.11 wireless Internet, and a better than average display, speakers, and keyboard. Despite these, this laptop is not a great performer and there are better options out there within this price range, including the 1201N.
