Review Of Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition

by Jerry1973 on April 22, 2010

The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition is similar to the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic Edition, but it provides the added benefit of a navigation system. GPS is quickly becoming a must-have feature of cell phones, but these navigation services traditionally came at a steep price. Google broke the mold when it rolled out free GPS features with Google Maps Navigation. Nokia followed suit, offering its Ovi Maps with Navigation as standard with its GPS-enabled smartphones.

The Nokia 500 Navigation Edition features a free Ovi Maps license with the phone purchase. The phone costs only $299 unlocked, making the inclusion of the GPS functionality with a smartphone’s capabilities quite the bargain. Though the concept is great, the proof is in the pudding. Some great features include the ability to view 2D, 3D, terrain, and satellite maps when offline and the fact that Ovi Maps can be used in 74 countries and 46 languages. However, the 5800’s user interface is not the most intuitive and the route recalculations populate a bit slowly.

This phone is very light, so it will be easy to transport on long trips. The clear, bright display features a high resolution. The screen is a bit small for viewing maps but the ability to switch between portrait and landscape modes helps a bit. The picture quality of the 3.2 megapixel camera is commendable thanks to a dual LED flash, Carl Zeiss optics, and autofocus.

The responsive touch screen is a plus, but the cumbersome qualities of the user interface make it less attractive. One tap is required to access certain menu items, while others require two taps without really a rhyme or reason. The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition features various forms of onscreen keyboards, including a full QWERTY version, but all are somewhat cramped. This quad band phone will support 3G service through AT&T but not through T-Mobile because this phone supports only 850/1,900MHz 3G bands.

Nokia’s 5800 Navigation Edition smart phone is a great deal at $299 unlocked with free license to Ovi Maps GPS capabilities. The phone contains a bright colorful touch screen but the display seems a bit small when viewing maps and using the QWERTY keyboard. The 5800’s multimedia capabilities include a great 3.2 megapixel camera. This phone is definitely worth a second look, if only for the GPS functionality it offers.
