Nokia Surge Offers An Alternative Smartphone

by Jerry1973 on April 14, 2010

With all of the talk of iPhone's, Blackberry's and Android phones, we figured we would present an alternative for people that had some unique features and that was also from another manufacturer. The Nokia surge is a nice little phone at a very reasonable price. It is not packed with the features of any of the phones that were already mentioned, but for someone that does not need all the bells and whistles, this will do the job.

Camera - the camera on the phone features both still and video options. Resolution is adequate at 2 megapixels, but the zoom is better than most at 4x. This is actually one of the features that we like best about the phone as many smartphones only offer a 2x zoom lens.

Music - one of the bigger drawing features of all smartphone users is the ability to turn their phone into an mp3 player. Most providers will not only offer their own "radio station," but this phone also takes downloaded music in various formats. It will definitely alleviate the need to carry around a second device.

Messaging - the phone features all of the expected attributes and accepts IM and text messaging, but adds Nokia Xpress audio messaging and video sharing. The video sharing is something that is becoming more popular with smartphone manufacturers, but it still not featured on all phones. There is also access to all email outlets and the phone can be set for direct push.

Extras - the Nokia Surge has a surprising amount of extra features and they all perform rather well. Internet surfing on 3g networks was quick and very easy to navigate, although non-mobile sites took a bit longer to download. It is BLUETOOTH compatible and features plenty of productivity software.

While the list price of the Nokia Surge is a little over US $200, AT&T is all but giving this phone away. New contracts can have it for about $30 after discounts and rebates. This gives a great option and offers a decent sized screen and a hidden QWERTY keyboard for easy use. It is not a Blackberry, but the phone will move than satisfy any casual user.
