Internet use through electronic handset devices will be more available and less costly to the mass market, so says Mary McDowell, Nokia head of mobile phones. Nokia has been spearheading a campaign in the production of low-priced handset mobile phone devices that have internet access capability.
Less expensive phones are now expected to provide online-based services and capabilities such as the ones present on high end mobile devices the likes of which are entry to online apps stores, connectivity to social websites like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace, and the ability to surf the worldwide web, still according McDowell. In the recent Nokia World 2010 Conference held in London, McDowell intimated to the press that a huge population in some parts of the world, especially those in the developing countries, does not have access to computers hence in order to get up-to-date information about the weather, current news, and to send messages using their mobile phones. The handset has been very useful for these people in retrieving timely information, data that may affect their daily lives, including impending disasters as tidal waves, hurricanes, storms, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, oil spills, war, and many more. And the information does not come only in text but also in photo and video format enabling these people react faster.
How about local news, facts and information that may affect these individuals’ lives directly? Nokia plans in providing local based services that allows these users admission to information pertinent to them, news that is happening around their general vicinity, right where they are. This feature would be ultimately practical and constructive more than ever if the news is life-threatening.
And on top of it all, additional attributes are to be supplemented on such phones which may include tools that will forecast where traffic bottlenecks are going to be and other very useful features. The launch of the said phones is yet to be announced but McDowell says it will be soon. And according to her, Nokia will concentrate more on phones with keyboard and touch screen combination capabilities because survey shows people favor more the traditional keyboard types than the touch screen kinds.
Many users have been discovered to not use the touch screen format but rather make use of the keyboard pads more, just like the Nokia C3 Touch and Type model.
If things go as planned, mobile access to the internet will double in number and frequency as soon as the Nokia program is launched and made available to the emerging internet market.
