Mobile App Users in the U.S. Growing

by Ava on September 20, 2010

Not everybody may be using the apps that are present on their mobile phones and internet devices just yet.  Nevertheless, the Pew Internet Project has just come up with a report that confirms the fact that the number of mobile app users in the United States is growing fast.  The figures that Pew presented in its report should allay the fears of app developers and the mobile internet device companies about a constricted market.  Instead, this is expected to encourage the said firms to go ahead with their plans of manufacturing new and more improved models of the mobile phones and internet devices.

According to Pew’s studies, more than half of the number of adults who own mobile phones has access to different kinds of apps on their units.  What should be more encouraging to software developers though is that two-thirds of those who have apps on their phones actually use these. One clear proof that Americans are beginning to appreciate the over-all value of the apps is that many of them actually searched and downloaded it themselves.  This definitely means that as long as they are aware of the benefits that certain apps can provide them, they will surely download and use these.

As expected, the app usage has not overtaken the traditional uses of mobile phones.  A great majority of mobile phone owners still use their units for sending and receiving text messages.  A bigger number even use their devices more for taking pictures.   About 38 percent only use their mobile phones for browsing the internet.  A much lesser number use the apps installed on their devices.  Despite this, however, the growth in the number of app users remains remarkable, especially because such features have only begun to appear in the last two years.  Within a couple of years more, it is probable that app usage can equal that of internet access.  This is obviously a cue for app developers and mobile internet service providers to boost their outputs.

Another interesting finding from the Pew Internet Project study is that most of the apps used are for gaming.  This is closely followed by those used for obtaining information on the weather and on the latest news updates.  These findings only prove that many Americans use their mobile phones for relaxation as well as for keeping themselves informed.  Aside from this, however, almost half of the number of people who download apps utilizes their phones for accessing social network sites.
