The European Union (EU) has issued a statement stating that Iran is purposely jamming satellite broadcasts and using mobile internet phone technology to spy on its citizens. In its statement, the EU “calls upon Iranian authorities to stop the jamming of satellite broadcasting and Internet censorship and put an end to this electronic interference immediately.” It is thought that Iran is trying to limit citizens’ access to reports of anti-government protests that have been taking place throughout this country in recent months.
The BBC and two other broadcast networks that operate internationally via satellite claim that Iran has been interfering with their broadcasts regularly. The other two networks are Deutsche Welle and Voice of America and all three state that the broadcast jamming started with the celebration of the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. These news sources come into Iran via a French satellite and this is where the blocking is taking place.
While the EU has not stated what if any action it intends to take if Iran does not stop the electronic interference, trade sanctions are a possibility. Mobile network operator Nokia Siemens is in the middle of this controversy. There have been reports that Nokia Siemens has sold technology to the Iranian government that permits it to block social networks and even monitor citizens’ mobile phone calls. The company has publicly stated that it will no longer sell technologies to the government.
Whatever actions the EU intends to take in this matter with Iran, it is separate from the international concern over Iran’s nuclear program. The U.S. and other nations were encouraging the United Nations to invoke heavy sanctions in response to Iran’s refusal to stop nuclear-oriented projects. The exact numbers are unknown but thousands of Iranians opposing their government have been arrested during large-scale protests. The EU believes that the government is using mobile internet phone technology and other filtering techniques to keep their citizens in the dark and quell future protest gatherings.
