Indian Access To Encrypted BlackBerry Information

The Home Ministry in India threatened BlackBerry originator Research in Motion with a shutdown of the email and messenger services for the mobile device. The reason for the threat is that India wants access to encrypted information sent via BlackBerry devices over mobile broadband connections. Research in Motion seems to be acquiescing to the Indian government’s concerns in light of the fact that it is being presented as a national security issue.

The encrypted content in question is fed through Canadian servers so monitoring by Indian intelligence agencies is difficult to accomplish. Monitoring in and of itself seems rather fruitless because it is likely that a savvy terrorist would already have considered this fact and developed alternative ways to stay under the radar. Terrorism is not often stopped by the monitoring of only one electronic device.

In addition, terrorists do not often purchase post-paid accounts for their cell phones because they need to provide proof of identity and a billing address to set up service. They instead rely on pre-paid phones with SIM cards that can be easily exchanged. In addition, they often use secret codes for communication and establish email accounts at cyber cafes. Creating email messages and saving them as drafts rather than sending them allows the content to be viewed and edited by fellow terrorists without the message having to be sent.

The fact that the BlackBerry servers are housed in Canada, a country that has an excellent security relationship with the U.S, is something a terrorist probably already knows. It is likely that intelligence agencies are monitoring the BlackBerry messages sent over Canadian servers. However, this act is just a portion of what takes place in the national security arena.

Rather than one country targeting a single mobile Internet device, developing global cooperation regarding national security might be a more productive approach. India comes out of this current situation looking like a bully regarding the control of digital information. Not much has been accomplished other than Indian citizens fearing that their precious BlackBerry will become nothing more than a pricey cell phone.
