HP Drops Windows Phone 7

by Ava on July 27, 2010

In a surprised move, Hewlett Packard (HP) has finally made its official statement about the rumors that have been hovering around the heads of gadget freaks. HP just came out with a confirmation that it will not be involved in making phones compatible with Microsoft Windows Phone 7. Instead, all new HP phones will not have the webOS, the mobile operation system that became an HP asset, the moment they acquired Palm earlier this year.  This change in approach actually comes in the wake of HP’s $1.2 billion grab of Palm, a Smartphone pioneer.

There were rumors suggesting that this bold move by HP was about to happen, and now the rumors have been confirmed. However, it is not like HP and Microsoft are going to severe their ties, or at least, that is what the official HP statement implies. But even then, this sudden shift of tides comes as a major blow for Microsoft considering HP is one of their main and oldest customers since one can recall.

Aside from announcing that the company will not do phones operating on Windows 7, it has also been made clear that together with Microsoft, HP will continue to raise the bar as far as innovation is concerned. In the statement, HP would still remain to be “Microsoft’s biggest customer”, but they would never make any Windows Phone 7 device according to Todd Bradley, the executive vice president of HP during his interview with CNBC.

Being the biggest Microsoft consumer, that strong relationship shared by HP and Microsoft lead to several raised eyebrows when HP officially refused to work with Windows Phone 7. In fact, before HP bought Palm, it has already declared that it would be a strategic partner in all of Windows mobile endeavors. But the $1.2 billion dollar acquisition seems to have caused a certain type of amnesia quite fast.

The hints were there when HP had announced right after the Palm acquisition that it would re-evaluate its ties with Microsoft for the coming years, without explicitly stating that with the power of Palm, the dynamics of the game had certainly changed – instead of a Windows Phone 7, HP now wants to explore and use the Palm’s webOS mobile operating system in all its future devices. According to Bradley, the company’s intent is to focus the resources (that were once intended for Microsoft products and projects) and really make webOS the best OS it can be.

And so this recent revelation may not be as much of a surprise to those who have seen it coming. But then again, what are the real plans of HP if it will not make phones with Windows Phone 7? Well apparently, it definitely plans to make the most out of the wonderful webOS which landed in its lap after the acquisition of Palm.
