Google Voice to Take the Center Stage

by Ava on July 7, 2010

When Google announced that Google Voice will be launched very soon, almost all telecommunications-related company went into a fevered response. Some people call the search giant’s service formerly known as GrandCentral a potential game changer. The VoIP calling feature of Google Talk can immensely threaten Skype Ltd. Other observers were also fussed with its range of capabilities – from voice to text transcription, and to its ability to send and receive text messages. As usual, the premature assessment of Google’s ambitions and powers in the field of communication are again overblown. However, recent developments show that at the very least, there is one major way upon which this new service could have a great impact – adding fresh and new mobile dialers to Google Voice could make the overwhelming international cellular charges a thing of the past.

The main feature of Google Voice is its free phone numbers for individuals. Users can log into a website and have calls to their numbers forwarded to any phone – yes, landline or mobile – they like. They can also make outbound calls through Google Voice with their numbers registering as the caller ID. Google Voice offers unlimited calling in North America, while international calls are practically just the same with any other VoIP services. This only means one thing – Google Voice will be much cheaper than international calls through cellular carriers.

However, there is one hiccup about Google Voice that Google has to look into. Those who have tried Google Voice said that outbound calls are hard to make. To make an outgoing call, the user has two options. First, he or she can log on and type in the number that he wishes to call (or if it is in his address book, he can get the number there). Google Voice then calls the phone he is using, then calls the destination number and connects the calls via VoIP links. Second, the user can also dial a Google Voice access number, key in the number that he is trying to contact, and the call rings through the destination. Either way, both methods are pretty clunky.

But whichever option the user prefers to choose, this feature will surely provide them with a handful benefits. Google Voice is very convenient for all calls, inbound and outbound, domestic and international. The cellular price penalty for international calls will go down, and people will soon be able to use their mobile phones interchangeably with their landline business phones.
