Although more and more Americans are shifting into mobile internet because of its utter convenience, what many people do not realize is that it has more disadvantages than benefits.
Thanks to laptops and smartphones, office workers can now take their work with them anywhere and (virtually) everywhere. They can open and check their mails in the bedroom, in the lounge and even no their kids’ outing. Laptops and smartphones indeed make it easier for employees to constantly keep track of their mails and other transactions in the web.
There are some people who check their mails almost every minute, making them almost inseparable to their work. Laptop and smartphones serve as an employee’s virtual office, and that is exactly where the dangers come in. According to research, bringing work and the office environment at home or practically anywhere outside the office itself can cause a huge detriment in the private lives of employees.
A study conducted by Melissa Greg of Sydney University involved a set of interviews with more than 26 employees affiliated in information industries, who classified themselves as doing at least some work at home. Gregg’s main agenda is to study about all the extra work that happens outside the office walls, a practice that is widely allowed by this new freedom to be in touch with work should the need arise.
The participants involved in the study strongly disagreed that the practice of checking mail as well as sending them from home, is part of work. However, they agreed that the mails constantly intruded their evenings and weekends and have had an effect in their family relationships.
The study further showed that employees checked their emails late at night in bed and as early as 6am before their children woke, allowing them quiet and concentration to focus on “real work” during office hours. The study revealed that these employees were trying to hide from their partners and kids in order to spend time checking their emails. On top of that, these employees even check their mails during non-work days in order to keep things moving.
The main disadvantage of laptops and smartphones is that it blurs the line that separates the home and the office. The time that the employees use to check their mails at home could be productively used in spending time for their kids and family.
Another drawback of using laptops and smartphones is that the people who worked entirely from home felt a great amount of pressure to be religious in answering the emails right away, in order to prove that they were not relaxing somewhere else when they are supposed to work. That pressure, if felt on a regular basis for a long period of time, could lead into serious health, emotional, and even psychological problems, according to the study.
