China Embraces 3g Mobile Technology And Wireless Network Expansion

by Jerry1973 on March 9, 2010

The second largest mobile provider in China, China Unicom, announced that it is focusing its resources on its new 3g network in the upcoming year. The company’s chairman held a press conference in Beijing where he also said that overall investment rates would decrease except for in the area of 3g development. All of the major Chinese providers started embracing 3g mobile technology and building 3g networks in 2009.

Chinese providers spent a whopping $21 billion in 3g technologies and accompanying network needed improvements. The number of subscribers continued to soar throughout 2009. According to the Chinese government, there were more than ten million at the end of 2009.

The government’s Ministry for Information Technology predicted at the end of 2009 that the mobile industry would grow at a rate of 12 percent in 2010. However, revenues were not expected to keep this steady pace and grow only around four to five percent. There is intense competition among the three authorized providers.

China Unicom is expected to hit the marketplace with its first ever-full Internet capable handset in March. This 3g model is expected to be the Android 2.0 Smartphone. It will be customized by the operator and support all of the typical applications including WAPI and Wi-Fi. The company also will release a Motorola product, the model XT701. Unlike western countries, mobile handsets must receive official government network access permits before they can be marketed.

There continue to be issues with Internet providers and the Chinese government’s restrictions on its citizens’ use and access. The interest in 3g mobile technology and the providers’ dedication to building out these networks seems to symbolize slightly more latitude on the part of the government. Only time will tell if typical citizens will begin to be able to enjoy the freedoms provided by wireless portable technology.
