Which of these words belong together, to quote an old Sesame Street song, and the answer is, all of them? It has been a big week in the world of high-speed networks with both Google and Cisco launching major initiatives. In the world of grid technology Internet, Google could be teaming up with the U.S. city of Boulder, Colorado or several others to test their latest foray into high speed.
Google has issued an RFI, techno/government speak that means a request for information for cities that want to be considered to serve as testing sites. Cities have to submit their applications by March 26, and many are already adopting pop culture marketing techniques. Topeka, Kansas is actually officially Google, Kansas this month.
So why do many think that Boulder is a shoe-in as a trial location? It is chock full of federal research sites and laboratories and the University of Colorado is well known to be on the bleeding edge in areas like biomedical and climatology. Google most certainly has given some thought to this massively tech-oriented city culture for testing purposes.
What might Boulder get out of this deal? This hub of innovation is home to companies that are heavily delving into smart grid applications and high speed is what it all about. Being able to download data at one gigabite a second opens up wide vistas for collaboration and data sharing. This could radically upgrade the already amazing applications and software being explored by Boulder’s highly educated techies.
What does Google want to get out of this game? Beyond the obvious need for beta testing, Google recognizes communities that are future focused and one of these is Boulder. Google wants do their grid technology internet testing in vibrant communities that are solidly behind their efforts. However, it is not only this, they are astute at recognizing readiness. Boulder is definitely ready and waiting to put this extra speed to the test.
