Bluetooth Unveils V4.0 Advanced Spec

Bluetooth has now released new and advanced specifications that allow wireless devices to transmit short data packets at lower power consumption.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (ISG), a group of leaders in telecommunications, computing, consumer electronics, automotive and network industries, has finally approved the release of the new and advanced specification of Bluetooth.

The version is to be known as version 4.0, a more advanced and low-power technology for device manufacturers. This step of SIG provides go signal to SIG members that the Bluetooth SIG Qualification Program is now open for qualification of all Bluetooth product types to the Version 4.0 specification.

The Bluetooth 4.0 spec will allow transmitting low-energy and short-data packets at 1MB between devices. An example application will allow Bluetooth-enabled sensor sending physiological data, such as heart rate, to a wrist device worn by an athlete. Other applications for health care, sports and fitness security, and home entertainment will be more useful with the availability of this new Bluetooth wireless technology.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Michael Foley, executive director of Bluetooth SIG, said "The finalization of Bluetooth low energy wireless technology within the Core Specification is a monumental achievement.

The following spec features the Bluetooth low energy wireless technology, the hallmark of the v4.0 Bluetooth Core Specification:

• Ultra-low peak, average and idle mode power consumption
• Ability to run for years on standard coin-cell batteries
• Low cost
• Multi-vendor interoperability
• Enhanced range

Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity of a broad range of electronic devices. This low energy wireless technology will allow high speed technology transfer of video, music and photos between phones, cameras, camcorders, PC’s, TV’s and other wireless devices. This new technology design can be used in devices powered by small, coin-cell batteries and will allow this batteries to operate for more than a year without charging.

It is also a new low energy enhancement to the Bluetooth wireless technology Core Specification that paves way to a large new market for watches, remote controls, and healthcare and sport sensors. It has the ability to communicate with the hundreds of millions of Bluetooth-powered mobile phones, PC’s and other devices. As it consumes low energy, it allows user to maximize usage at ultra low cost.

Bluetooth SIG has also released for device manufacturers the test documentation, as well as requirements and tools to qualify products as v4.0 complaint.

SIG has thousands of members that include mobile companies like Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia; and computer brands like Intel and Lenovo, and the Microsoft.
