The BlackBerry Torch 9800 from Research in Motion is one of the pricier smartphones, retailing for $499.99 through ATT Wireless. It has some improved features but tends to exhibit sluggish performance and could use some hardware upgrades. Overall, smartphone reviews conclude that the Torch represents the required step-up that RIM needed to take to stay competitive.
This smartphone is a slider, unusual for RIM, which includes both a QWERTY keypad and a touch screen. The touch technology is not SurePress like on the BlackBerry Storm, so users do not need to press down on the screen for a touch to register. This phone is the first RIM device to include BlackBerry OS 6, which features improvements like a universal search, a better user interface, and enhanced multimedia and browser experiences.
The 3.2 inch screen features a built-in accelerometer that automatically changes screen orientation when the phone is rotated. Both a Micro-USB port and microSD card slot are included on the device. The Torch comes with a wired stereo headset, USB cable, and a 4 GB microSD card, some nice additions to the package of accessories included with other phones.
Where the phone falls short is in terms of its display and 624 MHz processor. It features only a low-resolution screen and the camera only shoots VGA video. The phone can be slow to switch between tasks and applications can only be saved to the main memory.
The user interface on this phone makes accessing and managing apps easy. Menus are intuitive and the Web browser is improved. One of the greatest features of this phone is the universal search function that scans almost the entire contents of the device, third-party apps, and sites like Google. The Torch also contains all the business-friendly features present in other BlackBerry devices like email, conference calling, and smart dialing.
