The Samsung Omnia II possesses many improvements over its predecessor, making it one of the top Windows Mobile devices currently available. Highlights of this phone offered through Verizon Wireless are its AMOLED touch screen, customizable user interface, and wealth of multimedia features. GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and 3G support add to the positive user experience. The only drawbacks are the phone’s bulky size and occasional sluggish performance. Even though it is a bit pricy through Verizon at a cost of $199.99 after rebate with contract, this smartphone is well worth every penny.
The bulkiness of this phone serves a purpose and that is to showcase the beautiful 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED touch screen. The display’s bright, sharp picture stands head and shoulders above the first version of the Omnia and touch screen smartphones offered by competitors. Though the touch screen is resistive, no use of a stylus is required. The onscreen QWERTY keyboard can be displayed in both portrait and landscape modes. It features the new Swype technology via which users can spell out words by dragging their fingers on the keyboard from one letter to the next. Swype seems to work easily and is very accurate.
Samsung’s TouchWiz 2.0 user interface is a great way for users to multitask and access apps. This version of TouchWiz supports more customization and enables access to the company’s Widget Store for downloading over 200 third-party developed widgets. Multimedia lovers will appreciate the phone’s 3D cube interface and toolbar. The media player supports many formats and features a great deal of functions and effects. The Omnia II also features an FM radio and streaming player.
Omnia II’s sharp 5-megapixel camera comes with digital zoom, flash, and video recording. Camera options include antishake, auto focus, and various modes of shooting. Photos may be sent to others via email, MMS or uploaded to popular social networking sites. Omnia II also features a TV-out capability, which is rather rare on most smartphones.
The Samsung Omnia II’s 3G support and integrated Wi-Fi are supported by a superfast processor. Even video downloads are no problem, courtesy of the streaming player. The clarity of the large resistive AMOLED touch screen and great multimedia capabilities make this a superb Windows Mobile smartphone purchase.
