The Battle of the Year, Android Against the iPhone

by Ava on October 7, 2010

Phones using Google’s Android operating system has been raking in the sales in the past couple of months, so says Nielsen. For example, the most chosen smartphone platform based on what the most recent buyers opted for is Google’s Android operating system. Based on the latest reports, in the last six months, thirty percent of all those who bought smartphones chose an Android-run device. And that percentage showed a steady increase since it started the year at fourteen percent and saw itself at twenty eight percent come July.

On the other hand, the iPhone dipped in sales starting at thirty two percent in July and now down to only twenty five percent, most likely a casualty of the upsurge in Android-powered smartphones.

This consistent increase in sales of smartphones operated through Google’s Android can be attributed to more benefits and more accessibility since Android phones come from different makers with different capacities and features offering a more diverse field of options. Second, Android phones are not limited to only one internet carrier but to three major carriers – Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T. According to Nielsen researcher Roger Entner: "Distribution and choice is king, they expand their distribution to Verizon, Sprint and AT&T and introduce a whole slew of devices and their market share goes up like a rocket."

The iPhone is exclusively available only on AT&T. That puts some stress on its sale since people may already feel convenient with a particular mobile phone carrier and they would prefer nothing else based on their experiences. Research in Motion’s Blackberry is right smack on top and it has been on the lead for the longest time garnering thirty one percent share of the total number of smartphones sold and the iPhone is perched at the second spot with twenty eight percent shares. Android comes third.

More promotions spells advantages to the buying public and since Android phones have different manufacturers and carriers, they come with their own promos to entice customers to buy and that is one of the factors that are killing the iPhone against the Android. In fact, in connection with this, AT&T just announced that it will start introducing new Android phones coming from the cellular phone manufacturer Motorola and the prices are so affordable if the buyer commits to a two year contract.

So if Apple wants to put a stop to Android’s ascent, it has to make some serious adjustments and it has to do it now.
