Stan Shih, founder of the computer giant Acer, likens the iPad and the iPhone to mutant viruses. In his recent speech, Mr. Shih spoke about the recognition and esteem Apple is currently basking under because of its currently very popular products such as the iPad, iPhone, and lest we forget, the resilient iPod and he describes them as similar to mutant viruses, organisms that does not have ready cures initially, but eventually, after much experimentations and trials, they can be eventually cured and isolated.
Not responding to the current cures that are effective against its non-mutant counterparts, experts on treatments and cures retreat to the laboratories and drawing boards to come up with a new concoction that will put to stop the mutant virus’ proliferation. And Mr. Shih’s figurative description may actually ring true.
Apple’s release of the iPod, iPhone, and the now very famous iPad, caught everyone, especially computer and computer peripheral manufacturers including the big names in the mentioned industry such as Microsoft, Samsung, and the like, off guard. There were opposing opinions, as was expected, and the Apple fanatics hailed the new innovations as superior in quality and functionality while the rest of the pack evidently termed the Apple devices as inferior. And like the experts searching for a cure to stop the mutant viruses, it does not take a day to put a lid on Apple’s conquest of the mobile device world, which is what it has been doing in the past years. it will certainly eat up a few years or so before those that were caught unaware can come up with something that may equal, or perhaps supersede the capabilities of the Apple devices. In the meantime, Apple continues to pile on the benefits and attributes one can get when he or she uses these gadgets, leaving those who want to catch really far behind.
Mr. Shih’s fearless forecast tells of Apple’s relegation to where it was in the beginning, the downslide of its sales, and the other players coming up with products that are not only as good as that of Apple’s but may be better. Well, in truth, Apple has not really dominated the smartphone business at all, especially when it comes to sales in the United States, and of course the computer world is still in the hands of desktop makers.
And according to Mr. Shih, because the markets that they work on evolve in a natural manner, it will eventually become stronger in the long run.
