To date, the iPad is considered by many as the benchmark in the tablet world. All the developments undertaken by all the other competitors are geared towards unseating the iPad on the driver seat of the marketing and sales of tablets. The only thing that would work for Research in Motion’s side the moment it releases its Playbook tablet is that Apple does not come up with features that equal RIM’s Playbook capabilities.
Currently, the Playbook boasts of the best computer specifications ever – because of RIM’s QNX technology. The Playbook has multitasking capabilities unlike its major counterpart, the iPad, and a very potent 1GHz dual core ARM processor that beats iPad’s processor by a mile.
The same processor is the reason for the Playbook’s multitasking capability. Research in Motion is making sure that there is a massive space in between the Playbook and iPad considering that the Playbook is yet to be released in the first quarter of next year and Apple has ample time to come up with something to even things up when it comes to technology. And that is the reason why the Playbook is making quite a stir in the IT world since it is making the tablet arena an even playing field.
The dual core may spell the difference in Research in Motion’s quest for tablet sales supremacy; and historically, it did the same thing when all the PCs adopted the dual core processors and iPad should seriously consider going the same way, but of course we all know that Apple has the knack of going the other way, always against the mainstream and it has worked wonders for them.
Regarding the Playbook’s dual core advantage and the resulting multitasking ability, CEO and co-founder of the QNX software system had something to say: "The QNX Neutrino architecture can also support true multitasking on multicore hardware--in fact, its multicore prowess has been performance-proven in the world's highest-capacity routers. As a result, it can run multiple applications simultaneously, while delivering very high performance." QNX Software Systems was just recently acquired by Research in Motion last April.
If Apple decides to go dual as well, then the only question left would be who can best market their wares? Apple backed by its solid reputation and its pioneering efforts and Research in Motion with its superb performance in the smartphone line of business (still unsurpassed by iPhone) are the two that will battle it out once the Playbook reaches the popular market.
