The iPad was actually an experiment of sorts, and there was never any indication at the onset of its release that it will sell the way it is now. In fact, the iPad has currently dislodged the DVD player as the tech item with the speediest adoption rate, that according to Bernstein Research.
Right off the bat, the iPad was swept off the shelves with a whopping three million being sold on its first eighty days and is now averaging four million and a half units each quarter. It is noteworthy to mention that the iPhone sold a million units in its first quarter in the open market and the DVD player amounted to three hundred fifty thousand on its first year after its launch.
Bernstein Research retail analyst Colin McGranahan mentioned that "The iPad did not seem destined to be a runaway product success straight out of the box. By any account, the iPad is a runaway success of unprecedented proportion."
And what McGranahan was saying was absolutely true in every form since the iPad is poised to outshine the sales output of mobile phones and gaming consoles in the coming year generating an estimated earning of nine billion dollars in sales. The items currently on top of the sales list would be the notebook PC, smartphones, and the television.
And to add a feather to its cap, Apple has opened a new category in Consumer Electronics in the form of the iPad and it is set to become the fourth biggest Consumer Electronics category in the United States. And to think that there was much skepticism on the iPad and even a lot of electronics experts said that the iPad was just a phase. With iPad leading the way in the tablet industry, it would be very interesting to see how the other tablets will be faring as they are soon to be released and three of these highly anticipated tablets are the Dell Streak, the HP Slate, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
To assuage the displacement of the DVD player from the top spot, it would be noteworthy to mention that the DVD player is still the electronic appliance that also displaced the VHS player and revolutionized the home viewing business.
However, while new technology is being discovered, millions are still expected to catch up with everyone else and purchase their brand new iPad.
