Tablets are now fast becoming the much preferred alternatives of people who do not want to be constrained by the computing limitations of the smartphones and the bulkiness of laptops. This is according to a discussion by J.K. Shin, Samsung’s mobile telecom president. To prove his point, Shin mentioned figures that tell how people are gradually appreciating the power of tablets, such as the data that in this year alone, about 13 million of such these state-of-the art mobile internet devices have been sold. However, as he mentioned these figures, he was also asserting that the iPad’s dominance in this particular market is no longer as stable as it was before. In fact, Shin was introducing the Samsung Galaxy Tab, one of the several tablet brands that is challenging iPad’s reign.
It took some years before iPad encountered serious challenges because of the rise of several competitors though. Microsoft’ Tablet PC and the Courier were considered potential competition when these were still in the developing stage. However, the Courier never made it to the market and the Tablet PC did not make much of a ripple to offset the iPad’s wave. This led to the belief that iPad will be on sole option for many tablet users. This is especially because the iPad is already equipped with so many features that will discourage the consumer to take a look at its competitors. There are still some inadequacies in it though and this is what the competitors are expected to take advantage of. The iPad does not have much ports and nor does it have a USB for flash drives.
However, such belief is not being shattered gradually with the introduction of tablet brands that many observers in the mobile internet gadget market believe will take a good chunk of the iPad’s potential customer base. The most prominent among the contenders to iPad’s throne is the Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Although credit may be given to the Tab’s successful marketing campaign, what may make tablet users like are technical specs that this has. Its OS is the Android 2.2, which is fast becoming popular among tablet users. Another competitor of the iPad is the Folio 100 from Toshiba. With its 10.1-inch touch screen, it provides a direct challenge to the iPad’s 9.7-inch screen. This also uses the Android 2.2 as operating system. The Archos 101 also has a touch screen tablet of 10.1 inches although it has other smaller similar gadgets which it calls as internet tablets.
