There is another good news for people who are always on the go and have the need to carry with them database files that are essential for work and even for studies – the FileMaker Go for iPhone or iPad. This is best for the need to carry around database information be it simple lists of data or more complicated applications that use multiple kinds of information and complicated logic. FileMaker Go works by making FileMaker Pro database from Mac or Windows machines that are available on iPhones or iPads.
FileMaker is a subsidiary of Apple and its sales of more than 16 million copies of FileMaker Pro making it the second most popular end-user database. Unlike Bento, which for sometime has been offered by the company as database running on Mac and with an iPad version, FileMaker is not as much limited as this is a more full-featured program and is targeted towards small businesses seemingly competing with tools the like of Access and Alpha Five.
FileMaker Go allows you to take a 600-megabyte FileMaker database with several images included while still enabling it to work easily and very well. It supports for most scripts, tab controls and embedded pages with the capability to run databases without modifications. If one needs to access his or her database over a network, this is possible and if you use a FileMaker server you can even access SQL databases that it connects to. In order to move the database to your device you can do so easily by dragging files within iTunes.
Of course like any other programs this too have some limitations – just not as much as others. Although you can enter content you can neither possibly create a new database nor modify the structure of one that already exists. If you are after making your database changes on your device in sync with the files on your PC, this can be tough too as this is not possible. However you could always copy the whole thing back if you want to have it on your PC, just not easily sync multiple versions.
Viewing your database on your iPad is no tough thing because of the wide space but you will have to do some pinching, zooming and moving of the screen if you have one on your iPhone. All in all, the cost that FileMaker Go requires from you is reasonable especially if you really need to carry data with you.
