Verizon is now capitalizing on its humongous membership on broadband service connections which is provided by FioS, and turning a new facet of the business, the FioS TV service. Last Wednesday saw Verizon and FioS TV launching the amazing three-screen Flexview options, the movie and rental purchase, and the new iPad app that can turn the iPad into a DVR and a cable-ready mobile television set.
To start with, the app should work utilizing your home’s Wi-Fi TV connection and allow the iPad to be able to watch anything on its screen. And this can be done while another person is watching a totally different channel via the home’s television set using the regular top box. In order to choose whatever channel or show you want to watch, a mosaic like set of images will show on the iPad screen and all you need to do to access a specific show is to tap on the screen of the iPad corresponding to the show you choose and voila! you are immediately transported to that show. The user is identified by the app via the cable line the home is attached to and it also has the capacity to determine the channels allotted to the specific subsctiber.
However, there is still a lot to be had and a few more legal steps to go before this app can be of use to iPad users. There is the challenge of convincing the show providers to, first allow the viewing of their show through the app (of course this new technology can be read by others as another way of show piracy) and second, convincing them not to charge extra on the viewing of their show. Time Warner and Turner Broadcasting have shown positive reactions on the availability of the show everywhere.
But of course the whole idea is for FioS TV subscribers to have the capability to bring their iPad anywhere together with the shows available and watch them through Wi-Fi, wherever it is provided.
The FioS movie rental and sales is an exciting prospect if it is really made available in the future if the app’s launch becomes successful. For now, FioS TV subscribers can buy movies in the range of $2 to $18 dollars depending on the quality (SD or HD) and the shows popularity. Of course if they buy it, it is theirs for life even after they are FioS TV subscribers anymore. And the movie file will be saved in the Cloud, not on the local storage, so that the customers can still access it whenever he or she wants it. However, if you just rent, you need to watch it within forty eight hours or the rental expires and you would not be able to watch it anymore.
